This Series is Complete!

I can’t express how good it feels to finally say that the Love is Cure, Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues series is complete! Seven whole books, all following the theme of opposites attracting by pairing saints with sinners—vices with their virtues—and curing it all with love. 

This journey of creating stories with tropes ranging from enemies-to-lovers to second-chance romances has been incredible. I’ve learned so much about character dynamics and plot development, and I truly loved seeing myself grow as a writer.

Plus, we got some really great books out of this journey. Really great books!

Each story in this seven-book series is a standalone, which means you can read them in any order you choose. While the stories are connected in some ways, the way each story is told ensures you won’t get lost whether you start with book four, work your way backward, or jump around.

This series has been a labor of love that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed creating. These are my babies, and now they’re yours too!

Let’s Talk Eryn’s Disdain for New York City and Simeon

Eryn is a character who fascinated me from the start. I’ve never dealt with a character who hated my hometown with such passion, especially someone who lived there for most of her life. That made her a character I couldn’t wait to explore.

 Why Eryn Hates New York: A Deep-Seated Resentment

Eryn hates New York. There’s no way around it, and she doesn’t keep it a secret. She goes into great detail about why she hates it and even takes us back to the day that hate began. Her loathing of NYC is a major part of why she didn’t return after leaving almost a decade before her story in Sloth begins. Eryn has always been drawn to the idea of moving to California, especially during her last year of college when she realized her dream agency was out west. But her need to stay in California and never set foot in New York’s concrete jungle again creates a significant obstacle for her. Beyond the memories the city holds, it’s also where she experienced many firsts—falling in love and experiencing heartbreak. The place she’s vowed never to return to is the very place she must revisit to heal and move beyond the pains of her past. Exploring The Character Connections in the Love is Cure, Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues Series

My book world is growing, and with that growth, the connections are becoming more and more apparent. Introducing “From Friends to Forever”

To say I’m super excited to introduce my latest serialized romance, From Friends to Forever, would be an understatement. Set in the charming town of Rose Hill, New York, this story is extra special because it brings back two characters you might already know and love. And I know how much we love reconnecting with my story’s side characters.

Remember Kelli Sutherland from In Love, I Trust? She was Serenity’s childhood friend and the sweet manager at Serenity’s bistro, Bellyful. Well, In Love, I Trust is part of the Rose Hill series, a dope collaboration I did with ShanicexLola. When Shanice reached out to me about this project and described Rose Hill, I fell in love with the idea instantly. And now I’m returning there to tell another one of those love stories that makes Rose Hill one of the most beautiful fictional towns on the page.

That brings me to Ryder Wallace. He first appeared in my story One Mic as a contestant on a music reality show. I enjoyed developing Ryder’s character, and he became a favorite of mine. His passion for music and his complicated feelings about his hometown made him someone I knew had more stories to tell. In One Mic, Ryder mentioned his best friend Kelli, and that got me thinking about their story. Since then, I’ve been waiting to make a temporary home in their lives.

An Intro to Sloth

And so it begins! Sloth is the last story in the Love is Cure, Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues series and has a release date of September 19th. This book will conclude my longest running series and I cannot wait for you to read it for many amazing reasons besides it being the last story. 

For one, we’re dealing with characters always meant to be (like all my other characters). However, decisions and circumstances that were too big for them to handle at the wrong time, changes the trajectory of their futures. 

But like life, their story worlds collide when they least expect it, leaving them to need each other in more ways than they first believed.

We met Eryn Peters and Simeon King in previous books in my catalog. First, we met Simeon in So This is Love (Book five in the Forbidden series) as the MMC Dallas’s agent and then we met Eryn in Gluttony (book five in the LIC series) as the younger sister to Everett – the MMC. In both stories, Eryn and Simeon mention each other and their relationship, stirring up curiosity about their romantic history.

Especially because neither one of them would just tell us what happened. 

That’s because there’s so much more to just telling us. To tell us what caused their breakup would make us want to know the complete story behind it, and that’s what we will get with Sloth.

Wrath & Patience Are The Perfect Pair

When I came up with the concept of pairing vices with their virtues, it was something I was excited to get started on. Opposites attracting offers so much material and opportunities for organic conflict to arise. It’s a romance writer’s catnip. At least it’s my catnip lol. 

I’m five books into the Love is Cure, Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues series which is all about opposites attracting along with a few other tropes but pairing the vices with virtues is the core of this series, and soon it will have a new addition. 

Wrath, book six in the series, takes a very realistic approach to opposites attract. As with all the other vices and virtues, at the end of the stories, the virtues assist the characters who are self-sabotaging under their vices to reform, and they both get the bonus of love out of the deal. 

Wrath follows the same path when paired with patience.

**Trigger Warning** What Inspired Me to Name Wrath’s FMC Lauryn?

Unknown fact… character names are the very last thing I choose when outlining a story. Sometimes the name changes while the story is being written. A lot of times, I’ll just use whatever name seems like it would fit the story at the time of writing. That’s why a lot of my side characters have similar names in different projects 🙈 something I realize whenever I reread a story.

I’ve become more mindful of this naughty habit. By looking up names and purposefully not selecting names that sound like I’ve used them before in any of my 30+ projects, I’ve avoided this mistake. Names are still the least of my concern with a story unless the name contributes to the story in some way. Or I purposefully select the name. And that happened when I named my FMC Lauryn James’ name in my upcoming story, Wrath.

An Intro to Wrath

I can’t believe I’m writing a blog post about the sixth book in a series I created 🥰.

It feels like only yesterday I was announcing Pride’s (book one) release date. And now here we are five books later, and only one book (after Wrath is released) away from completing this series. 

Insane! 

I am so happy to share details about Wrath. There’s so much to discuss and so much ground to cover. I wanted to take a different approach with Wrath because this story differs from other books in my catalog. 

I’ve mentioned one character from Wrath, Lauryn, although she wasn’t mentioned by name. The mention was in a passage that appears in Envy (book four) in my Love is Cure, Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues series. 

At first, Wrath was a story I dreaded telling, but over time, after developing the characters and finding another reason (albeit heartbreaking) to write this story, Wrath has easily become one of my favorite stories to tell in the series.

2023 In Review – The Year I Moved In Faith

It feels like I was writing a 2022 year in review just yesterday.

This year started off with me running on a ground that felt like it was already in motion and it’s kind of ending the same. I have been working all year, and I am not exaggerating. Home has been busy and so have my writing and creative projects. There has been very little time for rest, and you know what? I’m not complaining! This was apparently the season for me to work and build sturdy foundations. A season for many storms to hit, too, and to clear what no longer served me out. Scenes from my stories that live rent-free in my head, Pt. 1

I’ve written a lot of books. When I look back at how many stories I’ve outlined and written in my almost 9-years of being a self-published author, I’m blown away by the number of stories I’ve told. While I love every moment in a story told by me, there are specific moments that live rent-free in my head.

These are scenes that likely inspired the storyline of said story or they are scenes I just couldn’t wait to sit in front of my computer to get out of my head and onto a doc.

A Love Deferred Turns Five And Gets A New Cover

I’m proud of myself! I have made goals this year that I have set and crushed, and this is yet another one of those goals.

When I released A Love Deferred five years ago today, I told myself I would re-do both A Love Deferred and the story it continues, Unsilent Knight’s, book covers. Although I loved both covers individually, I wanted the covers to share similar elements visually. I wanted them to have similar styles and not look so different from each other. 

I put off the task several times over the years, but this year I said I would do it.

FAQ: What Book From Your Catalog Do You Recommend I Start With If I’m New To Your Work?

This year I celebrated 8-years of self-publishing. And eight years later, I still feel I could do a better job recommending books to readers who are new to my work.

My book world is diverse. Most of my books aren’t like the ones before it in my catalog. And while there may be similarities in my stories, if you are looking to read a book exactly like a book you’ve already read in my catalog, it won’t be an easy find unless it’s in a series or shares a similar trope.

That’s because my vision for my catalog is to create a book world like the melting pot I call home. Filled with a variety of characters with varying personalities, from different upbringings, and having experiences both good and bad that differ across the board. But regardless of how different they all may be to each other; the characters will all connect in some way. The unspoken idea in my storylines is based on the idea of six degrees of separation. Meaning, all my characters connect to each other by six or fewer other characters in my book world. 

Like life.  

While my first response whenever I get the question, “I’m new to your work. What book do you recommend I start with?” is for readers to read my books in the order I have released the stories, often that isn’t necessary.

#Blog: I Found My Very First Completed Manuscript!

Let me set the scene.

I was in my spring-cleaning mode this week and was clearing out the shelves in our home office, going through old dollar store crates I’ve had for close to a decade, and I found this, my very first completed manuscript I printed out in 2014 the same year I wrote the story. 

It’s the first completed story (full-length and not a short), I’ve ever completed. A NaNoWriMo project. And though I’ve never published it, me finding it is a moment, it’s significant. Because not only is it my very first book, but I’m finding it close to a week before I release my 35th self-published story.

4 Quick Facts About When Luke Met Juliette

My next book release When Luke Met Juliette will go live next week, April 7th! I’m so excited for you all to read this book. I was standing in my kitchen waiting for my coffee to finish brewing when I thought to myself, “I wonder what number book When Luke Met Juliette will be?”

2022 In Review

I Think I’m in my ‘Let’s stay together’ era in writing

What does that even mean, right? 

Let me explain.

With every year and the books published in that timeframe, I realize my stories follow a certain theme. One year, I centered most of my books on my characters letting love in after resisting it. Another year, almost all my books dealt with redemption and forgiveness after my main characters made questionable decisions in their pasts. 

Based on the theme for Home Before Midnight–my last release for 2022–and the books I will work on in 2023, they seem to all center on my characters nurturing the love they‘ve cultivated in their relationships after their happily ever after.

You know what I love the most about this journey as an independent author? The lessons I learn along the way. I’ve gone through different phases as an author. Going from wanting to write but not being able to finish a single book. To writing the books but not knowing how to market them. To marketing them but not really knowing my audience. And on and on it continues to go with the realizations, adjustments, and challenges that blossom into lessons learned and the proper moves being made.

It sounds overwhelming but honestly, it’s something to be grateful for. I’m growing and with growing there are growing pains, but baby, I am not where I started and if I had to start all over again, I won’t ever start from the beginning. I’ll always start from experience.

Why I Will Never Write Another Last Comes Love Again?

I’m about a handful of chapters away from typing “the end” on the fifth book in my Love is Cure, Vol. 1–Vices & Virtues series, Gluttony, and it’s really got me thinking. While this book has been a real labor of love (I’ll write about that experience once I’m done), I’ve had many other stories challenge me so much I almost didn’t finish them.

One of those stories was Last Comes Love (LCL).

When I combined two separate stories and made them one (Rylee’s story was a solo story and so was Lennox’s), I did so after many months of thinking. A bittersweet love story was uncommon, especially in romance, a genre I predominantly write in. This is one reason I listed LCL under Women’s Fiction instead of Romance on Amazon where it was published. 

As someone who empathizes deeply, whether I experience things first-hand or vicariously, the initial idea of bringing this story to life was a decision far from easy to make.

But I did it, boldly, and with foreknowledge that it might anger some readers and possibly land me on some do not read lists. Most romance readers read love stories in search of the coveted HEA. I also enjoy reading love stories for the coveted HEA. However, my soul’s urge was to tell this story for two reasons – representation matters and because I just really wanted to tell this story.

Catching Up With Cadence & Meki from A Love Deferred

I’m so deep into Gluttony that there’s no turning back now, which is a great thing, because the love I’m nurturing for this project has me enjoying every chapter I create. The details in Gluttony are so precise, I’m taking my time to bring them to life in story form. The details matter and the details help move the story forward. I can’t wait to share more. 

As mentioned in a previous post, I have plans to include a few familiar faces from my previously published stories. While a lot of the couple updates have and will continue to appear in the BK Book Lounge (there’s a new glimpse publishing next soon!) some couples deserve an update too detailed for a glimpse but too short for another book.

To write a book about a sin that revolves around consumption, most notably consumption of food, has been an eye-opening experience. Though the story is thematic, it’s told in a relatable way with a storyline that’s interesting given the subject matter.

#STIL: What to Expect from So This is Love

So This is Love will be my 32nd self-published story and I literally cannot believe I just typed that! I have grown so much as a writer on my self-publishing journey. The thinking I had at the start of my author experience is not the same today… in a good way! This book and all the other books I’ve written this year have challenged and altered my perspective on what it means to be a writer. Once upon a time, I used to think to write, to be a writer, I needed a desk, and a laptop, and to set the scene before writing the scene. All of that is still nice to have, but I’m learning more than ever that technique is queen and the most important thing in all of this.

The unofficial character in My First, My Last

The unofficial supporting character in My First, My Last. The Twin Towers were characters in my story that needed no character development. They came fully packaged and with a compelling backstory. The Twin Towers were a sight to behold in its prime. It shaped the New York City skyline beautifully and could be seen from miles. If you walked the Brooklyn Bridge or rode the train over it like I did, you marveled at its height. It towered over the surrounding buildings. It was iconic. Period.

Jeremiah Rhames. Does his name sound familiar? If you read my No Fraternizing series, it will. Jeremiah was the detective who interviewed Lila at the precinct when Romello was dragged in on charges in part 2 of the series. Jeremiah also appeared in part 3 of No Fraternizing, with a more significant role as the source to reveal Romello and Lila’s connected past. Just as he changed the course of the stories in part 2 and part 3, Jeremiah’s role in Loveless is just as significant.

#LovelessNovella: Who Is Joi Friday?

Joi Friday. She’s probably one of my most disliked characters I’ve written about to date. She’s an undeniable bad guy with a backstory that helps make sense of the person she becomes when readers first meet her in Forbidden: An Anthology.

She hints at it at the start of her story “Decadent Contradictions.” But because the story was a short story, we really didn’t have the time to get too deep into it. Loveless allows us to peel back Joi’s layers and to sort through the complexities that molds her character.

My 2019 In Review…

I still can’t believe we are at the end of 2019, the end of the decade! It’s impossible for me to mention the end of 2019 without mentioning the end of a decade. I started self-publishing in the middle of the decade, in 2015, and if you ask me, I wouldn’t even say that’s when I really started publishing. There was so much I didn’t know about self-publishing, so many mistakes made, but those mistakes taught me valuable things. My first story, No Fraternizing, Pt. 1, wasn’t even supposed to be a part 1. “Part 1” was supposed to be it. But after almost a year after publishing that story, I got a few messages from readers curious about how the story continued. I didn’t even know I had readers before their messages. And that’s what this decade represented for me… a time of discovery.
