New To BrookelynMosley.com – BK’s Character Hotel!

I’ve added a new webpage to BrookelynMosley.com that should have been added a long time ago! Being a fan of hand drawings and art that resemble hand drawings, I sometimes try to incorporate art into my writing. Whenever I create characters, the way they look, the timbre in their voices, and even mannerisms unique to them amongst other things become mighty clear. Bringing the characters to life via art has been a dream come true.

So… I’ve been world building for Last Comes Love and the Love is Cure & Forbidden series!

With my next few book releases, I’m diving deeper into the waters of my creativity. This summer, I spent a lot of time working on my craft, studying world building and fictional universes of all things. Honestly, I thought that world building was limited to fantasy genres. You know, Harry Potter type ish. But it turns out, world building can happen in any genre and I’ve fallen head over heels in love with it.

Truthfully, I’ve done world building but at a small scale before this summer. In a lot of my stories, I’d throw in a fictional setting to keep the story rolling during the drafting process and keep the setting while editing if it works well with the plot. Often I used real establishments to authenticate a story but now, I’ll do less of that and will construct a fictional world sort to say, starting with Last Comes Love.

Last Comes Love will be the first of many. It will be my first real contemporary romance novel that narrates the story through two different perspectives. Last Comes Love and the story after it will be the only stories (that I know of so far) told from a third person perspective since the format called for it. These books will act like a link for the books that proceed it. So far, most of the names mentioned in Last Comes Love will show up in my Love is Cure series along with stories in my Forbidden series. As I mentioned in a previous post, the Love is Cure series and Forbidden series will connect at some point. For instance, with Joi’s story from the Forbidden series, her friend will appear in the GREED story from my Love is Cure series. It will all make sense once complete.

Anyway, back to this world building…

While working on Last Comes Love, Forbidden, and Love is Cure, I created a few settings in detail that will appear in a few books moving forward including a fictional basketball team (two actually!) along with a magazine, a university, a restaurant, and bar & lounge. It’s been a lot of fun breathing life into these fictional settings and because I’m me, I went ahead and created logos and a mag cover for a few of them.

Let’s explore a few, shall we?

Psst… Check Out My New Logo!

This year so far has been a year of growth that has been immeasurable. I’ve dared myself to move more toward challenges instead of moving away from them, poured more of my energy into creative writing, and I’ve spent less time freelance copywriting which was originally a scary idea. I honestly never saw anything past publishing my first story, No Fraternizing, Pt. 1, and it only became a part 1 when I decided to continue to give this self-publishing thing a real try. And I’m glad I did because here I am today, invested and inspired to keep going.

What I’m Working On: Book 2 Of The ‘Love Is Cure Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues’ Series

I have wanted to do a series for the longest but I couldn’t come up with a theme. When the idea to work my version of the seven deadly sins hit and I let it marinate so that it became an idea I could be excited about, I ran with it. Like I explained in a previous post, the first book from the Love is Cure Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues series, PRIDE, is complete and it is soooo good, but listen I’m bias lol. I love all of my books once I’m done with the first draft. The first time I pore over the first draft and self-edit it, now that’s a whole different story. But the love returns after it has gone through a few rounds of editing.

New Series, ‘Love Is Cure Vol. 1 – Vices & Virtues’, By Brookelyn Mosley Coming In 2020!

I can’t keep this to myself any longer. First, let me just say this series has been at least two years in the making. I spent time reworking it off and on, researched until my eyes crossed, misplaced pages then found them. I typed several outlines on my old computer, outlines lost after my laptop experienced water damage winter 2018. Inspiration has hit then went away only to come back again and be overshadowed by a clearer more exciting idea at the time. But I actually sat my ass in a chair this time, mapped out all the stories, and have already dived in.

This. Is. Happening!

So what is this series?

Bookversaries! They Call Me Mello, No Fraternizing, Pt. 2 & Love, Hate & Revenge, Pt. 3

It seems I got a lot of love for August 1st lol. I have three books to celebrate bookversaries! When I was working on my calendar last month and realized that I released not one but three books on the same date just years apart, I had to laugh. They Call Me Mello’s release was intentional. I liked the mirror effect of the dates 8/1/18. But NF2 and NF3 were purely coincidental… or was it? I find it cosmic that NF2, the book where Mello first makes an appearance was released on 8/1 like his book. I didn’t even plan that. Anyway, Happy Birthday book babies! They grow so fast! Have you read any of them?

What To Expect – ‘Forbidden Series’

After completing the final story for my Forbidden anthology, which was a last-minute addition (“Divinely Illicit” – Mello’s story), I knew I would continue all the stories. But I wanted to pose the question to readers, give you the option of choosing the story you wanted to see continued. Many have asked for continuations for all the stories, so that is what I intend to do.

What Would A G-Rated Story, By Me, Read Like?

Let’s try something a little different, shall we??

I wrote my first sex scene by accident. It was in college, sophomore year. My characters… they just wanted to do a little more than just kiss that night. So, I went with the flow, let them do their thing and what resulted was something hot! And it was love at first type.

In high school, when I wasn’t acting a fool with friends, I spent a lot of my time writing short stories in a black and white composition notebook. I didn’t consider them to be short stories. They didn’t follow the typical format of a short story but they weren’t diaries either. To me, I was writing what I saw in my mind.

The stories were always cutesy little boy meets girl type tales but the urban version with comedic vibes. I liked the quirky flawed girl storylines, a lot.  The highlight for me were the kissing scenes with the guys who she would consider way out of her league. I used to write the hell out of a kissing scene! Around that time, I read a few books by romance authors but my genre of choice was suspense, thrillers.

Edgar Allen Poe’s shorts were my thing. When I wasn’t reading his stuff, I was sneaking peeks at Zane’s anthologies. I am in love with erotic fiction but I got a thing for suspense, it’s like my side boo… even till this day… especially in movies. I add a little suspense in my erotic fiction but it’s subtle and appears in the form of twists most of the time. In fact, in my subscriber only story I’m releasing in a few days (you can read about that drama surrounding that here if you care to), there’s some suspense weaved into the storyline.

About two years ago, I participated in a short story contest. Submitting my story created a domino effect for me, resulting in me challenging myself every month since then to write a short story off the top of my head. It’s a challenge because I’m all about planning out my stories and creating outlines before typing a single word.

For the contest, writers were asked to write a short story, under 900 words, using a prompt and the story had to be written fresh with little errors… in one day. I was so stressed that day and almost didn’t submit what I’d written. I’ve participated in this contest at least three times, always feeling like I should just give up midway.

But I did, submit, and that time I won, placing first under another pen name… and I’m posting that story here today.

They loved it… but can I keep your attention when there’s 0% intimacy involved? Let me know!

#MrandMrsJonesNovella: What To Expect From ‘Mr. & Mrs. Jones’

My next release, Mr. & Mrs. Jones, drops in 30 days which means it’s time to divulge a little information.

The writing process for this book was one of the most enjoyable processes I’ve ever experienced since I began my journey as an urban erotic romance writer. Life was still happening outside of my computer. I won’t lie and make it appear as if everything was easy.

But writing a love story starring two of my favorite characters… yeah, I had fun.

The Making of ‘Forbidden: An Anthology’

In two weeks I’ll release my 12th self-published book on Amazon. Well, technically, it’s my 5th actual book since most of what I self-publish are short stories but I digress. The book is Forbidden, and it was one of my most challenging books I’ve worked on. The process was tedious but I’m ecstatic with what I’ve created. Months of research and creating character profiles has resulted in well-told stories that offers the one thing I search for in books, the perfect escape. So, since we’re inching closer to Halloween, the release day for my Forbidden Anthology, I’m ready to talk about the creative process behind it.

#MakingMrAndMrsJones: Tips & Tools I’m Using To Get To ‘The End’

It’s that time again! I’ve started writing a new novella, and this is just not any ol’ novella. It’s a book where I’m writing about two of my favorite characters… Melodee and Amir. I fell in love with these two during the planning and writing process. Now, I love all my characters as I’ve said before but there’s something about the evolution of Amir and Melodee’s love that I admire the most. So, after two months of outlining, researching, blah, blah, blah… I’ve started writing it and I’m more than halfway through it.

When I first wrote this blog post, it was during the outlining phase of the story. Since then, I’m close to finish… yesss! The words have been flowing these past few days and I’ve been surprising myself at how far I’m getting with this work. And trust me, I’m not breezing through it. I’ve been taking my slow ass time. This is what’s baffling. So, I wanted to share what I’m doing hoping it can help another writer who may need tips on getting to their “end.”

Via social media like Facebook and Instagram, if you’re following me, you’ve noticed the hashtag I’ve got going, #MakingMrAndMrsJones. I wanted to try something new and to bring you guys along for the ride of creating this novella. A behind-the-scenes glimpse at what’s happening. This will also help keep me motivated and held accountable to finish this baby of mine.

For the readers, I think it will be fun for you to see a book come to life and evolve from nothing into something. And for my fellow writers, you’ll find the BTS (behind-the scenes) stuff resourceful… or at least that’s what I hope.

So, how am I doing it?

5 things to expect from a story when you see the name Brookelyn Mosley on its cover

As I begin work on a new novella, I’m thinking about my “brand.” You hear that a lot as an author (or anyone really) offering a product or service.

As an author, I’m a small business owner. I’m in the business of words. My products are my stories and novellas. Your reviews are my testimonials. And my business location is in your mind.

So, when I think of my “brand” and what I want people to think of when they hear or read my name, 5 things come to mind:

#NewRelease: Girl Code Available Now On Amazon! And FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

My new release is here! I’m so excited to announce that my new novella, Girl Code, is available now on Amazon, FREE with Kindle Unlimited.

Brainstorming this story was a lot of fun  and it was even more enjoyable penning the story. My favorite kind of stories to read and write about center around friends turned lovers. There’s just something about witnessing the evolution of a friendship transitioning from platonic to romantic *swoon*.

And that’s what you’ll get from my newest novella, Girl Code.

#NoFraternizingSeries: Guess What’s Coming In 2017?

The Tables Will Turn, And A Shocking Secret Will Be Revealed

part3

As the cover suggests, this one is all about Lila and the choices she’ll have to make starting in Chapter 1.

With each novella in this series, my goal has been to bring you, the reader, closer to the main character of the story, Lila Moore. This is also evident by the covers, with Lila going from being out of sight to moving closer to the front of the cover for part two.

So I started the series with narration at a distance from a third person’s view, then I gave her the wheel to narrate the story herself in part two. Now in part three, not only is she narrating, she’s bringing you into her mind, sharing her unfiltered internal dialogue as she goes through each life altering experience. Like all my characters, Lila has flaws, but like a boss chick she doesn’t hide it, especially in this final novella.

You’re going to have to read it to see what I mean!

Stay tuned for more news!

#NaNoWriMo2016: The Prep, What I’m Working On, And The Tools I’m Using

Hey loves,

I’m taking part in this year’s Nanowrimo! It’s a month-long event in November where writers are challenged to complete a 50,000 word novel in 30-days. Yes, girls and boys… 30 days. Now for me, I write A LOT, but I usually write novellas. Though I’ll be aiming for 50K, my real goal is just to complete the body of work.

The Prep

To make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible, I’ve planned out EVERYTHING. I wish I was that person who could write by the seat of her pants (off the dome, making it up as I go) but the way my focus is set up… yeah, no. I have an A-Type personality when it comes to my fiction writing. I don’t understand why this personality doesn’t trickle down to other parts of my life, but hey… I get in where I fit in. Because of this need to always have everything in order, I’ve already planned out my novel (or novella, only time will tell) from start to finish. I’ve researched as much as I could, have the links needed for reference, know how the story will end, and I have the cover ready. I’ll post the cover by mid-November.
