“How do we play?” I asked.

“We place our bet and roll the dice,” he answered in my ear, making me shiver. “Our bet is seven.”

“And if we don’t roll a seven?”

“Then we don’t win.”

“Okay, so…” I turned my head to glance up at him over my shoulder. “How much are you betting?”

“We,” he corrected, emphasizing his words with a smile. “… are betting it all, beloved.”

I turned in his arms this time to get a better look at him. “Excuse me?”

He smiled. “We’re shooting for even money.”

“Even money?!” I shouted. “What the hell is even that?”

Simeon focused above my head and nodded, refocusing on me after. “It’s time for the come-out roll.”

“Huh?”

I did not know what he was talking about and strangely, that made me more nervous but extremely curious, too.

Simeon leaned forward to scoop up the two dice off the green table. He rattled them a few times in his palm, then brought his fist level with my lips and said, “Blow the dice for me.”

I couldn’t help smiling at that. “What if we lose?”

“What if we win?”

“Seems too risky, no?”

“Sometimes…” He caressed my chin with his thumb. “The risk is all worth it.”

“Sir,” someone called behind us.

“Look,” Simeon started. “If we lose, then we lose. And if we win, then we win. But at least we’re trying either way, right?”

I stared into his eyes, my heart beating a little faster. “Is this still about craps?”

“Sir,” I heard a second time behind me. “Your roll.”

Simeon focused on me. “Our roll.”
